Institutions Research shows that the resource curse is less severe with good institutions (See Box 5). ‘Good institutions’ with good governance practices are typically more successful with extractive industries practices. Creating an environment of good governance is at the heart of the institutional and policy changes needed to sustain sound fiscal management, sustainable and equitable development and extractive industries. Good governance concepts such as transparency, accountability and checks and balances are mechanisms to counter corruption.
